Tove Styrke – Even If I’m Loud It Doesn’t Mean I’m Talking to You

And we close out Swedish Monday with an old favorite…

Iain Mew: Like if The Ting Tings’ “That’s Not My Name” had funk bright enough to match its attitude.

Alfred Soto: Swedish pop trying to sound like Ashlee Simpson and Toni Basil instead of the other way around. The organ peals, Prince-ly backing vocals, distortion, and tribal drums won’t stop until you do.

Brad Shoup: There’s so much happening here — phonemes as off-beat rhythms, strangled acoustic strums, drillbit organ — that Tove can get away with the same cadence and melody for nearly two minutes. Having said that, the cadence isn’t monotonous, more of a splendid, sense-flattening update on Junior Senior or the Ting Tings. It’s a better uptempo DFA production than DFA could ever manage, and it’s in service of the best song title in years.

Jonathan Bradley: Any good song can be made better with a title that would look best on a t-shirt — ask Pete Wentz — but not even the wittiest slogan can substitute for personality. “Even If I’m Loud…” has more bangs and bright lights than a pinball machine, and a beat that bumps about as vigorously as a ball inside the same, but it needs a vocalist who can match the flair of the tune’s trappings.

Juana Giaimo: The beginning made me expectant to see where this song was going, but I soon realized that the answer was nowhere.
[5]

Will Adams: The guitars dulled almost all of the edge this could have had.
[6]

Anthony Easton: Scandipop at its most L.A. — it has all of the self-love, all of the commitment to noise, all of the spitting anger and gorgeous liberation. Almost as brilliant as Ke$ha’s “Blah Blah Blah.”
