Sean Paul ft. Dua Lipa – No Lie

It’s Sean Day! Let’s give our first Sean the light; it might help him do a better song.

Micha Cavaseno: Years and years have gone by where we mistook the diwali riddim being iconic as Sean Paul being a remotely passable dancehall artist. Listening to him lazily throwing out nothing bars, with Dua Lipa posing beside him in an affect to half-ass mimicking patois, while he sells out in a way that is neither with passion nor even cynicism, but the lazy expectancy of someone who’s gotten away with mediocrity unchallenged for far too long, and now has even less standard to uphold.

Katie Gill: Glad to see that 2017 Sean Paul is making the same songs as 2007 Sean Paul. Dua Lipa does an amazing job smoldering and giving as baller a chorus as a song this oddly sedate can give us in the first place.

Leonel Manzanares de la Rosa: Dua Lipa’s hook is tremendous; her gritty tone, along with the melody’s elastic cadence and the Puttin’ on the Ritz approximation, fits the beat like a glove. The line “It’s gonna be lit tonight” dates this one firmly in 2017, while Sean Paul still sounds like 2002, for better or worse — ok, mainly for worse.

Scott Mildenhall: Only time will tell, but the odds on the chorus dating this in years to come seem quite high. Will it be remembered in years to come? Again, probably quite unfavourable odds, considering how strong Sean Paul’s existing catalogue is. When he squeezes himself so hard into an extremely conventional pop format, he begins to lose his charm. The most interesting thing about this song is the stimulus for looking up its performers’ similar history of lit-use on Twitter.

Claire Biddles: “Get the vibe / it’s gonna be lit tonight” is a bit “How do you do, fellow kids?” and both parties can definitely do better, but this is decent throwaway fun.

Thomas Inskeep: Sean’s ready to ride this comeback hard, finally releasing his own hit-to-be, and it’s about time. He toasts a bit and sings a bit, Dua Lipa spends the chorus telling you “it’s gonna be lit tonight,” and you know what’s not lying? My hips, which tell me this rules.

Alfred Soto: His passion for the mediocre beat undimmed, Sean Paul invites a keyboard to sound forlornly in the distance. Dua Lipa on the other hand is ready to throw it down, at the wrong kind of party.

Anthony Easton: Sean Paul SeanPauls at his Sean Pauliest and Dua Lipa seems just to be a half decent hook singer.
