Dizzee Rascal – Space

There’s been too much good garage lately for us to let this one slide.

Maxwell Cavaseno: OH BOY, FUCKING YIPPEE. IT’S DYLAN, FOLKS. HE’S DOING THAT STUPID MEMPHIS RAP DOUBLE TIME AGAIN. HE’S CLEARLY CONVINCED DANNY BROWN IS THE THING TO DO TO HAVE A CAREER IN 2017. OH BOY. AND HE’S DOING A MIGOS TRIPLET FLOW? WITH THESAURUS ABUSE? GOLLY GEE. CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS GENERIC RUBBISH TO BE HERALDED AS A SIGN THAT “Old Dizzee Back” AND THAT THIS NEXT ALBUM WILL BE THE BEST RECORD HE’S DONE SINCE Boy In Da Corner JUST LIKE EVERY ALBUM HE’S DROPPED SINCE THERE WAS ANOTHER ALBUM TO DISAPPOINT HAS BEEN CALLED. I THINK I’D RATHER LISTEN TO EMINEM. Okay no, I was being hysterical there, but this is really tedious.

Alfred Soto: I should be more excited, but this garage-by-numbers pales beside Stormzy’s recent efforts. Dizzee has never written a more cringeworthy bit than the line about aligning chakras.

Iain Mew: The rapid fire of the verses is impressive, and the track’s minimalism is well set up to highlight it. Without anything that exciting going on thematically, though, taking the same approach to the hook wastes the momentum. The result is not much more than dead space.

Ashley John: This track is missing the huge thumping beats of Dizzee’s successors who built on the genre he helped catapult into international fame. The minimalism of the song lends itself to his tremendous skill and power as a rapper. “Space” isn’t astounding or even particularly original, so what is most exciting is that it sounds like Dizzee is holding something back. This song feels like lurching up the side of a steep hill, the rest of this upcoming album a free fall.

Ryo Miyauchi: Dizzee provides me exactly one line worth keeping out of his grab bag of rhymes. But more than the bad hit-to-miss ratio of his lyrical miracles, I’m more bummed he didn’t take this promising concept of outer space further. At least the beat could’ve sounded more sci-fi.

Thomas Inskeep: Love the minimalism of the track, and can kinda listen to Dizzee rap all day. But in light of the explosions of UK rappers like Stormzy and comebacks like those of Wiley and Skepta, I just expected a bit more.

  1. I hope he fired everyone that told him collaborating with Robbie Williams was a good look.

  2. Alfred Soto kind of make one LMAo…
