Leningrad – Ch.P.H.

Cheetos, Pretzels, Hummus?

Tim de Reuse: Glassy rave piano under gurgling, ugly brass stabs in a rejection of St. Petersberg as the “cultural capital” of Russia and an embrace of seedy, tourist-repellant alcoholism. To be sure, it’s fascinating as a cultural artifact, and it’s got some kind of personality, but the charms of its knowingly vulgar chant-along chorus fade away pretty quickly once you’ve gotten over the initial shock.

Thomas Inskeep: This bonkers, drunken party of a song sounds like nothing I’ve heard in recent memory, to its benefit. This merry band of gypsy-rocking Russians sing some and talk-rap some, there’s a dialogue between a champagne-preferring woman and a man who insists she drink vodka, musically there’s some horns and some electronic touches and a little Nile Rodgers-esque guitar riffing, and the title very roughly translates as “Real St. Petersburg Bullshit.” You really have to watch the video (and turn on the subtitles). “Ch.P.H.” is pretty nuts.

Micha Cavaseno: Bar-room comedy-cum-philosophy works for more than a few people, and there’s no reason it shouldn’t hit its mark. Except Leningrad here are trying too hard to let you know that they’re both in on the joke, and want to club you over the head with the lamest of puns to surround the joke. Drinking never sounded more pretentious.

Alfred Soto: A Kesha parody over mid ’90s sub pop house beats?

Jibril Yassin: This sounds like a novelty anthem done wrong, a call to arms more befuddling than inclusive. Also *clap* please *clap* don’t *clap* force *clap* a chorus *clap* if *clap* it *clap* doesn’t *clap* wanna *clap* happen!

Iain Mew: The song structure plays out like a series of hecklers interrupting and then getting handed the spotlight, until forced out in kind. It’s a fun idea but in practice it constantly feels like the real fun party is happening just outside of where we’re being dragged towards at any given moment.
