Siberia – Cuore di Rovo

Next, via Derek, some Italian new wave…

Iain Mew: I’m glad we’re reviving the old tradition of having a song that sounds like this in every Readers’ Week. I’ll get back to doing my bit by liking all of them.

Alfred Soto: The background recalls Belinda Carlisle’s “I Get Weak,” not that anyone else will hear it. Carlisle got shit for not singing in pitch. Siberia does, and he gives the worse performance, his gestures fossilizing “Cuore di Rovo” into camp.

Katherine St Asaph: Huh, maybe landfill sophistipop wouldn’t be better with additional (i.e. existent) vocal effort. When I liked this, it’s when it reminded me of ABBA in stately mode.

Jessica Doyle: You know, I would not have predicted I’d find grand Italian pop irritating, but here we are. The video does not help. Nor do the parts in the chorus where it sounds like the lead singer is simultaneously straining his voice and blending in too much with the background sound. If you want to Make a Point, do it wholeheartedly, and make some space in your song accordingly, rather than risk an uncompelling muddle of synth, drums, and voice.

Nortey Dowuona: Snotty, gasping vocals from Eugenio Sournia struggle to stay afloat in a rickety raft girded by flat, empty synths, immoblie synth bass and flat, Mrs Which drums.

Juana Giaimo: As someone who studies Italian, I have a very hard time finding Italian music I enjoy. “Cuore di Rovo” features some aspects of Italian music I generally don’t like, especially the dramatic deep voice — it’s almost too artificial, and I’m having a hard time connecting it with the post-rock background that develops toward the end.

Joshua Minsoo Kim: I’m sure these vocals would sound good in a different context, but the stodgy instrumentation — fit for second rate Killers balladry — restricts them from sounding meaningful. Just as they’re about to balloon into something grandiose, the song ends.
