Becky G ft. Maluma – La Respuesta

So does this mean we’re getting a Madonna and Kane Brown collab soon?

Will Adams: Really does wonders for a duet when its two partners have actual chemistry and aren’t shunted together for cross-market purposes, eh? Even better when the beat is as playful as they are.

Alfred Soto: Now, here’s a duet that sustains the fiction of two artists singing at each other: Becky G shuts down Maluma’s silly demands, Maluma keeps insisting with a charm worn down to the nubbin. The light reggaeton beat keeps the home fires burning.

Joshua Minsoo Kim: Becky G isn’t putting up with any dude who’ll treat her like trash, so she’s prepared a response for them in the chorus: No (and no, and no and no and no). Maluma’s hilarious and sad response is to come off like a sleezeball, adding a bit of depth to the song (like “Mayores,” this duet doesn’t come off like a shallow attempt at pairing up two big stars for guaranteed success). In turn, Becky G’s final verse comes with a biting delivery — it’s firm, and has a tone that indicates that she’s clearly tired of dealing with men like this. The slight shifts in the reggaeton beat help to flesh out the details of this exchange.

Katherine St Asaph: As usual, Becky G makes generic material fizz and shine and stick more than it really should. And I’m not sure if this is new or if I’m just now noticing it, but at times she sounds uncannily like early Britney Spears.

Julian Axelrod: Maluma lurks around the outskirts of Becky G’s carefully constructed bop; even when they play off each other, he threatens to steal the song without fully entering the fray. I have less thoughts about the actual single than I do about his pants from the video. But to be fair, I have a lot of thoughts about those pants.

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: The core songwriting conceit here is strong enough, and the verse-trading that Becky G and Maluma put on in the last bit of song is more charming than it has any right to be — this is perfectly serviceable domestic pop that doesn’t outstay its welcome.
