Auður – Enginn eins og þú

We basically like Icelandic funk, apparently…

Thomas Inskeep: Relaxed pop/rock with a smooth, tight groove. Justin Timberlake would do well to go back to this sound.

Scott Mildenhall: It’s not just some Nordic neural shortcut that makes this recall Erik Hassle. Like so much that he’s done, it has an affinity with a casual funk that reads “retro” more than it may actually be — a ’70s imagined in the ’10s. It’s enjoyable and impressively assured in so many of the ways that Hassle is, but the key thing missing is evidence of hook-writing abilities.

Ian Mathers: Maybe the effect is enhanced by not understanding the language, but the emphasis placed on that one percussion right in the middle foreground of the mix is subtly bewitching. The rest of the track down to the vocals is a little smoother, but our little drum buddy just keeps chugging away even as the strings come in. I’m practically cheering for it by the end.

Kylo Nocom: A little “Super Freak,” a little “What You Need,” a little “Livin’ la Vida Loca,” and somehow still so pedestrian. Auður’s saving grace is his quaint usage of strings, incorporated to make his stiff funk just a little bit more sprightly.

Julian Axelrod: How do you say “Mark Ronson’s 2007 album Version might be more influential than I realized” in Icelandic?
[6]

Kayla Beardslee: A YouTube comment says, “shit hvað þetta er smooth.” I don’t speak Icelandic, but I agree.
