Iain Mew: Wikipedia has it: “Andy, 25 (8th May) is the lead singer/acoustic guitarist. He was formerly a member of boyband ‘Avenue’, alongside ‘The Wanted’ singer, Max George. He was born and grew up in Liverpool, and is a strong supporter of Liverpool FC. He previously dated The Saturdays singer Mollie King but the pair split in January 2011. In May 2012, Brown admitted that their break up was the subject of the band’s song Template:When She Was Mine”

Brad Shoup: Time for sums: one band member + two dudes who wrote a Saturdays B-side + the lead singer of Busted = an adult-alternative take on Alphabeat. It’s no Brother Beyond, but it’ll have to do.

Anthony Easton: Looking for context on the song or the artist, I discovered that the second biggest convenience store chain in Japan is named Lawson and had its origins in Ohio. That seems to be a story that is much more interesting, and something I would want to hear more music about. (I am thinking of a rockabilly star from Akron who moved to Osaka and started a band.)

Alfred Soto: Youthful generalism sung by hoarse man with David Coverdale attitude.

Ramzi Awn: “When She Was Mine” is a big idea to take on, and Lawson does it with all the grace and gumption of The Disney Channel.  Except far worse.  The fact that it makes absolutely no apologies for itself deserves some credit though.  And it’s almost worth it for the laugh.

Jer Fairall: If The Edge had a dollar for every band, from modern rock to emo to authenticity-striving boy-band pop to contemporary country to whatever hybrid of the above that this is, that ever made a buck off of his trademark guitar sound, he’d be…well, as rich as he is right now.

Jonathan Bradley: Frictionless and emotive radio rock is an easy whipping boy, so I’ll be specific: “When She Was Mine” is a failure within its reviled genre because it takes an airily wistful theme and blasts it into streamlined sterility. A hook this weak can’t withstand that treatment. If your best bet is to be the new Nine Days, why shoot for Maroon 5 meets Snow Patrol?
