Intocable – Te Amo (Para Siempre)

Truth in advertising…

Alfred Soto: For twenty years and through two deaths this Tejano band have released album after album without ever writing that elusive crossover hit. I’ve dipped tentatively into their forbidding catalog. This strikes me as typical: the kind of toe-tapping, innocuous number for which fans make their own YouTube wedding dance collages.

Josh Langhoff: Ricky Muñoz’s accordion solo sums it up — perfect, catchy, delighting in melodic motion and small changes of attack, nothing flashy. “Simplemente,” to quote the title of Intocable’s 20-year-old debut. Listen closely and you’ll hear their one nod to special recording effects: a pulsing electric guitar that pans across the speakers, the only sound without visual referent in “Te Amo”’s One Direction-biting video, where the band members play to one another in a circle and the camera caresses their instruments while a well-fed dog wanders the floor.

Iain Mew: The vocals are on point, just the right side of too much emotional outpouring, but aren’t the main attraction. I didn’t realise that accordions could sound this gorgeous!

Anthony Easton: Without knowing the language or anything about it, can I state that this is one of the more beautiful pieces of pop balladry I have heard in weeks?

Brad Shoup: It moves without going through the motions. Ricky Muñoz’s accordion is playfully understated; his vocals are cask-aged and handled with a craftsman’s delicacy. The rhythm section swings like a Lieber/Drifters production.

Jonathan Bogart: Everything about this is relaxed and assured, the work of old pros who know exactly what heartstrings they’re tugging. My favorite example is — if the video is accurate — that the skins on the drummer’s toms are so loose that the result sounds more like a drumpad than a tom hit. And then I love the guitarist’s faint high harmony throughout. And yeah, Muñoz’s singing and lover-like accordion work.

  1. This is good, really good.. [8] good, but I fell asleep in front of the keyboard because I am a twit.

  2. Intocable’s playing on a bill with Noel Torres this weekend, and my awesome librarian is going. When I mentioned “Te Amo,” her face lit up and she clapped her hands together and said, “Oh, that’s my SONG!”
