Katie Gill: It’s not as good as that one butterfly song but arguably better than that other butterfly song. But I always appreciate a good Boyz II Men slow jam, especially one released in 2016. We didn’t really need those Glee background vocals, though.

Adaora Ede: There’s nothing that won’t make “Butterfly” feel hopefully underwhelming after listening to it in entirety, but the hush-hush uplifting ballad that typifies its role as a coping song post Jang Hyunseung’s departure truly benefits from the lack of vocal bravado and the soft power of a strummed guitar melody.
[6]

Alfred Soto: A sticky ballad whose title doesn’t persuade me it needs a translation.

Cassy Gress: If your breakup song is about how you’re brokenhearted but you’re still so thankful that you even got to know her, and you sing it in a drifting 6/8 major-key ballad with hopeful piano and strings, and call her a butterfly, it’s going to come off a lot less like she broke up with you and a lot more like she died. Either that, or you’re being completely disingenuous about your breakup, acting calm and zen and “what happens happens” in an attempt to prove to her that you didn’t need her. Most of what I actually hear is everyone taking a crack at their falsettos, and some of them falling a bit short.
[4]

Juana Giaimo: The overproduction of K-pop doesn’t suit ballads, especially when the melody itself already sounds too corny.
[5]

Iain Mew: I like the way they confidently leave space for an arrangement which only gradually fills in the gaps. The sense of building momentum pays off when the electric/acoustic guitars stop fluttering around and the song powers up. It’s still a slow ballad with a key change forced in, but things could be much worse.
[5]

Will Rivitz: I’m sure that someday I’ll find a song that convinces me soft rock isn’t terrible, but this isn’t it.

  1. I forgot to review this but my score would’ve been medium to low too. I love Junhyung as a composer but these competent 6/8 ballads are trying.

  2. +100000 for the smile.dk reference

also, f(x)’s butterfly is my favorite butterfly by far

  3. oh man, I haven’t heard f(x)’s butterfly. dammit, now I’m gonna have to restructure my entire butterfly hierarchy.

  4. what about mariah’s? or bump of chicken’s which we did earlier this year :)

  5. also Grimes and Perfume, both of whom I’d put near the top

  6. >>>>>> Weezer, much as I still enjoy Pinkerton

  7. There’s a song called Butterfly by BTS also. Just to add another one :^)

  8. tell me it beats Jaejoong’s “ButterFLYYYYYYYYY,” at least.

  9. Kylie’s is great.
