STELLAAAAA!!!

Tim de Reuse: Funky, sunlit pop wearing strong French-house perfume. Every stylistic choice seems to reflect on an intention to be playful and ticklish and cheeky; the half-whispered verses and the palm-muted guitar and the admittedly catchy hook of “Je vous vends du fun” are all delivered with a mile-wide grin. It’s undeniably competent and even a little bit clever, but the unerring quirky cheer of it is exasperating, and at the end of exactly one listen it’s already used all of its tricks about as many times as I’d want to listen to them.

Ian Mathers: He’s got a very pleasant voice and there’s something enjoyably bouncy about the production here, but none of it sticks with me too long: fitting for Willem’s declaration that he’s a regular guy, but less so for the parts where he’s bringing the “sex and fun”.

Alfred Soto: A meringue-light mirrorball number propelled by a whispered vocal. As for Marlon Brando, imagine him in a ruffled potato chip tuxedo shirt, discreetly shaking his ass.

Nortey Dowuona: I’m really liking that pop music has a somewhat tighter groove, but this ain’t cutting it.

Crystal Leww: I guess if the 80s are back, it means that ALL parts of the 80s are back, huh? Sigh.

Cassy Gress: I like performers born in the same year as me, and Christophe’s not really an exception. I’m even pleased to see that he seems to be greying in the video, much like me. His upcoming album was inspired by a recent trip to Rio, but this doesn’t sound like it; it sounds more like he listened to all the hits Nile Rodgers has showed up on over the last couple of years and decided to do a late seventies throwback song. He’d been saying he was too old to pull off dance/club music anymore, so makes sense. Too bad this is about as funky as a slice of Wonderbread; at least he still has that fantastically gentle falsetto.
