CNCO – Quisiera

From La Banda straight into the official TSJ continuously updated boy band rankings…

Alfred Soto: The presets and acoustic plucking can be heard at any beachfront hotel pool deck, but I can’t deny the sweetness of this Simon Cowell-assembled quintet.

Katie Gill: I have found my new favorite boy band. Yes, everything about this band comes off as manufactured as hell. But dammit, we are living in a post-One Direction world, and I need something to fill this boy band void in my heart!
[8]

Cassy Gress: I have a theory, yet to be disproven, that I tend to like boy bands significantly more when I don’t speak the language, or at least can’t translate it off the top of my head. This is a Latino version of a BSB ballad without AJ, minus a bit of steam but plus a generous pinch of sugar. Joel’s prechorus (“Y si te vas, quien me dirá…”) is probably the sweetest bit of the bunch, but Christopher’s “antes no podía verrrrr” and Zabdiel’s “yo tengo mil y una razóóóóóón” both add a tender touch.
[6]

Edward Okulicz: I don’t say this very often, but this should have been a ballad. The parts where it’s just guitar and voice hint at an ability to create intimacy which even the best boy bands are hit and miss at, so it’s a bit disappointing that when the bounce comes back in the spell feels like it’s broken.
[5]

Madeleine Lee: As a boy band observer, I love that their formation in the music video is more or less in order of who sings from the viewer’s left to right (with adjustments to put the prettiest one in the centre), because it makes it so much easier to follow along with who is who. The ballad they’re singing is just as cooperative, and so mannered that its proposals of love are all in the conditional tense.
[5]

Brad Shoup: There’s no playfulness, no indication that they’ll slip the bonds of their pitchdeck. But they are sweet. The sessioneer reggaeton cedes enough spotlight for even the wispiest of the singers (Joel). Hopefully they’ll seize the means of production in time to sound like the Barrio Boyzz on album #4.

  1. “prettiest one” = joel right? because i searched on google for “cnco quisiera letra” and it had a preview image of a lyric video, with the screenshot being joel, and at first glance, all sized down, he looked a LOT like siwon from super junior and i was like OH HELLO

  2. Oh, 100%. That eye smile!

  3. I dunno, I might have to go for Christopher as prettiest one but only if he gets a haircut.

  4. Oh boy I am always predisposed to love boy bands of all kinds, and these guys are definitely no exception. Song is cute … Christopher is cute … (they are SO YOUNG though I thought I was desensitized by K-Pop but I’m not, apparently.)

  5. agreed on Christopher haircut

  6. There’s an official ballad remix, for those who wanted it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjWl8w0Z-iA
