Will Adams: What if the narrative of “7 Days” were instead crammed into seven hours and saddled with a hangover?

Scott Mildenhall: That’s an itinerary almost specific enough to give Marky Mark pause. If he actually were to take a break from his 90-minute showers and snacks, he might learn from this that less is sometimes more. The urgent-but-unrushed quality it achieves isn’t always a cinch. At the same time though, more could have been achieved with even less. It’s almost impressive how far the lyricism is overstretched. A pop song with plot holes — are they strangers or “more than friends”? Did he remember how long he’d slept in just before diarising it in the chorus? — and opening lyrics that read almost sinister; Drax Project may have been wise to have kept things even simpler than they did.

Katherine St Asaph: Oh joy: a trop-house “The Day Before You Came.”

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Open question: what’s the provenance of this guitar tone? I only hear it in EDM-leaning stuff, and the most distinctive example is probably in the 1-2 “Prayer in C”/”Sugar” pair that Robin Schultz put out in 2014, but I’m sure it exists earlier. It’s a distinctive sound precisely for its anonymity– it always bears an air of the quantized and sanitized, more the idea of a guitar track than its messy actuality. Anyway, I don’t have any idea what’s going on here, and the counting gimmick is forced in like some mediocre stab at “New Rules.”

Alfred Soto: What, Shawn Mendes wasn’t available?

Ian Mathers: Sometimes it’s hard to get past the visceral reaction of “god, I’m gonna be so pissed if I have to hear this fucking song one more time after I get finished this blurb” to articulate anything more cogent, you know?
