Eva Simons – Silly Boy

After being confused for more noted names, Dutch pop lass gets ready to make her own way…

Anthony Miccio: It’s a shame they revealed this track wasn’t really by Lady Gaga and Rihanna. It’d be hard to pull off a good Klaatu hoax in this day and age, but it would give the track – which is no more or less rewarding than an actual collaboration between those two would likely be – a little more reason to exist.
[6]

Martin Skidmore: Electro pop from the Netherlands, with some autotuned vocals reminiscent of Rihanna’s nasal tones. Her regular singing is much less distinctive and interesting, but this pumps and thumps along at a lively pace and is reasonably catchy.
[6]

Keane Tzong: Is this anything but a lab-grown combination of the worst parts of Gaga and Rihanna, dropped into a color-changed version of the worst La Roux video? And if its constituent parts can be so easily identified, is there any need for it?
[5]

Edward Okulicz: Takes elements of most of the extremes of pop’s most maximal excesses and makes it louder, faster, stronger but not actually better.
[6]

Martin Kavka: This is not only derivative, it also is sufficiently shameless and classless to proclaim that its derivative nature is its only selling point.
[2]

Kat Stevens: Obviously a sequel to “Disturbia”: Eva’s exuberance is more endearing than Rihanna’s iciness, but her chorus is less memorable. Hopefully the video will inspire La Roux to buy an extra case of Elnett hairspray so as not to be outdone in the Red Quiff Olympics.
[7]

Chuck Eddy: Could definitely afford to sound more Dutch. Not to mention sillier, though at least it tries.
[6]

Anthony Easton: Lasers!!!!!!!!!!!!
[7]

Iain Mew: The scattered laser-shots of the percussive synths are the highlight and meld rather effectively with the guitars, and while not exactly original or genre-defining, it’s great fun nonetheless. Or at least it would be, if not marred with the worst Auto-Tune we’ve yet seen. A singer who would otherwise be an adequate passenger of the tune gets turned into an intrusive backseat driver.
[5]

Alex Ostroff: The hatred for GaGa’s stuttered ‘Pokerface’ baffled me, but “Silly Boy”‘s “k-k-k-keeper” evokes similar blind rage on my part. Lyrically awkward and obtuse in equal measure, and Eva could be anyone else here. Should be, honestly.

Michaelangelo Matos: Not the worst hybrid there is, but not one I’m in any hurry to hear again.

  1. i think my favourite fact about Eva Simons is that she used to be in a girlband called Raffish. Raffish! That’s one of the most implausible names for a girlband I have ever heard!
