Gulddreng – Model

And B.L.E.H. Monday ends in Denmark…

Iain Mew: The pacey backing, alternately sparkly and screeching, helps to make Gulddreng’s Auto-Tuned ennui about fucking elite models sound more compelling than most manage, at least in musical terms. A look at a lyrics translation and its drinks making for easy girls is uncomfortable even with maximum benefit of the doubt that it’s meant to be self-critical or self-deluding.

Cassy Gress: It’s possible that this is meant to make fun of guys who are actually like this, but it doesn’t really sound like it — sounds like he takes pride, or at least claims identity, in being a “pig” and “fucking offensive.” Well, I find that fucking offensive, so:

Jonathan Bogart: I accidentally revisited 808s and Heartbreak last week, and it holds up better than I might have expected at the time. But I was also reminded of just how much the modern musical landscape is a product of its influence — and now my patience for music like this, which rips it off shamelessly with none of the self-lacerating insight, is extremely limited.

Tim de Reuse: The mid-heavy, oversaturated climax that wants to be the chewy center of this track utterly fails to get me pumped. I mean, I guess there’s some novelty in throwing a warbling, bored vocal through heavy Auto-Tune over stock progressive house synth patches, but what could possibly be the audience that’s nostalgic for both of those things?

Katie Gill: That chorus is wonderful. The plodding chords, the intensity, the backing “heys,” the sheer loudness, they all come together to make something immensely powerful… that is instantly dampened by the vocals. Gulddreng yelps and strains through increasingly T-Pain levels of Auto-Tune, proving that some things are better left in moderation.

Will Adams: Between the cheesy Imagine Dragons bombast, heavy Auto-Tune and lines like “all you can eat models,” it’s not hard to ponder whether “Model” is a self-parodic or self-unaware presentation of a truly despicable human. But the song isn’t worth trying to figure it out, anyway.
