Kane Brown ft. Khalid and Swae Lee – Be Like That

Sometimes it [3] like that…

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: A country singer, an R&B singer, and a rapper walk into a bar… and make a Ed Sheeran-esque pop song? “Be Like That” is none of its three artists’ strongest work (the beat is too betrays the decent songwriting), but the collaboration is seamless, and the hook is still enjoyable despite its banality. Three friends coming together to mope about failed romance will always sound alright as summer comes to a close.

Alfred Soto: This isn’t a song — it’s a marketing plan.

Tobi Tella: Less of a single and more of a dystopian look at 2035, where genres are abolished and all music is made under one umbrella, straight men stealing punchlines from Twitter.

Will Adams: “I wish I never met your ass” carries the same double-meaning ickiness that “Ass Back Home” did. One would hope that having a perfectly competent team like Kane Brown, Khalid and Swae Lee instead of Gym Class Heroes and Neon Hitch would improve the situation. But then you realize the song sounds like “Hey Soul Sister.”

Nortey Dowuona: If only Kane Brown could be a good songwriter/songwriting picker, this rickety guitar hookup with the lopsided bass drums and shifting percussion would support him as well as it does to Swae’s ghostly but personable wail and Khalid’s honeyed croon. These guys all seem like they’re wusses, especially Khalid, but Kane just can’t sell it. Let’s hope for better next time for these three.

Steacy Easton: These three are so distinctive as vocalists, and at least Brown has done some serious and interesting work fucking with genre, that to produce something so anemic is a mild disappoint. Perfect for August, when the weather is too hot for us to care about anything else.
