Kanye West, Gucci Mane, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Travis Scott, Yo Gotti, Quavo & Desiigner – Champions

So of course we’re all here to talk about Big Sean.

Edward Okulicz: Good posse cut — the track’s confident enough as a fanfare, Travis Scott’s chorus is pleasingly anthemic and you’ve got some good verses. It doesn’t feel too long, but you could cut out both of Gucci’s bits and it’d be tighter. Big Sean’s the MVP overall, but I also like Yo Gotti boasting about having place for two cars. Makes me feel super-rich having grown up in a house with driveway parking for three. Matter of fact, the whole thing makes me feel big and rich and important.

Katie Gill: 1: this is a bog standard brag rap. I dunno how much I can say about a brag rap that’s hitting all the brag rap cliches. 2: is Kanye trying to start a baseball team or what? 3: Desiigner had absolutely nothing to do on this track and that cracks me up. Sorry you’re still the alternate in Kanye’s baseball team. 4: Big Sean is easily the highlight of this track. A pity that he’s sandwiched between Gucci Mane’s lackluster verses. 5: for what’s ostensibly a Kanye song, a good 80% of the song is other people. I don’t know if that’s lazy or cunning. 6: again, bog standard brag rap! A halfway decent beat can’t really save the fact that we’ve heard this song before.

Leonel Manzanares de la Rosa: We can tackle the easy part of the posse-cut conversation and debate over who got the strongest verse any other day — come on, it’s obviously Big Sean — but the big story here is the Travi$ hook, riding the A-Trak synths and droning bass like, well, a true champion. That’s how celebration should sound like.

Alfred Soto: Neither bombing atomically, nor lyrically performing armed robbery.

Cassy Gress: It’s a testament to how done I am with Kanye that I’m relieved that he only raps for 30 seconds of this 5:30 song. He’s thoroughly outshined by everyone else on this, including that holographic paper synth bass (except for Desiigner, who does barely anything, and Gucci Mane, who seems to wish this beat was a few bpm faster).

Claire Biddles: Incredibly a track with seven featured artists manages to have more sonic coherence than the majority of The Life of Pablo, but it’s still kind of flat and uninteresting. The crew is impressive on paper but the relationships are weak — each verse just kind of happens without any development or climax. This championship team feels disconnected rather than tight.

Jibril Yassin: This isn’t quite the world conquering call to arms G.O.O.D Music needed but it’s a solid reminder of what they do so well and damned if it doesn’t make you want a ‘Ye button to help you conquer all your problems.

Thomas Inskeep: A-Trak, ‘Ye, and Lex Luger construct a BANGER of a track, and Kanye wisely gets out of his own damn way and cedes the verses to a shit-ton of his friends (with Desiigner on Future-hook duties, where he belongs). Everyone sounds solid at the least and great at the best. I love the sound of Big Sean’s voice, YMMV.

Taylor Alatorre: The Death of Pablo.
