Luis Fonsi ft. Daddy Yankee – Despacito

Crystal Leww: This is remarkably fresh and fun from two mainstays in the Puerto Rican pop scene! I really enjoy how this track moves — Daddy Yankee’s rap, in particular, feels like just the right kick that this track needs at the right time.

Will Adams: The subtle synth rushes in the production are a nice touch, but Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee exist in two separate songs, and there’s not enough done to reconcile the disconnect.

David Sheffieck: I kinda love how Fonsi and Daddy Yankee seem to be inhabiting completely different songs here – one a smooth jam extolling the pleasures of making love slowly, one a song about fucking hard while shout-narrating it in the tenderest of words. Daddy Yankee’s turned to 11 even when he thinks he’s whispering, and for once it’s a weirdly endearing non-sequitur, paired with the catchiness of this hook and Fonsi’s buttery croon.

Juana Giaimo: It’s evident that Luis Fonsi is trying to take the same path Enrique Iglesias did a few years ago — a ballad singer turning into succesful reggaeton star. His charm is now placed on the dancefloor with the aim of providing a youthful vibe to his music, but Fonsi’s affected voice is still attached to ballads, and Daddy Yankee won’t ever abandon his unbearable boastful rapping — meanwhile reggaeton has lately moved to a subtler and much more interesting sound.

Edward Okulicz: Artist order unseen, I’d have pegged this for Daddy Yankee ft. Luis Fonsi, because the former seems so much more at home in this milieu, navigating the rhythm more nimbly. Fonsi’s swallowed whole by it, and sounds a little cloying and desperate. His is quite a nice melody, though.

Alfred Soto: A few of the rhymes appalled me, and the preset doesn’t help. Call it “Desesperado.”
