Nick Jonas ft. Ty Dolla $ign – Bacon

Jonas for breakfast, early in the morning…

Juana Giaimo: Since going solo, Nick Jonas has taken himself too seriously, so “Bacon” works well as a genuine self-parody. He keeps his dramatic tone in the first verses made up of short sighed lines full of suspense. But as soon as he makes clear his lyric subject, the song flows effortlessly. The double-chorus is kept simple with that playful and catchy “you-uh-uh” that makes a fitting end. As a result, “Bacon”‘s sense of humor feels fresh and fun without being too ridiculous to be ashamed of listening to it.

Brad Shoup: What can I say; I’m in for the lug. Not that he needs the help, but the bass strikes and synth flutter are a helluva harkening to my favorite sound of the last decade. But he’s astride it with a particular pose — not the invisible jazz hands of the market, but the doe eyes of someone who wants to be known. Toss bacon on the pyre with all the signifiers that signify poorly for the tosser, who cares: he’s hovering in every room, trying every trick.

Katherine St Asaph: The prospect of a Jonas brother using “I woke up like this” to celebrate his contemptful bachelor lifestyle is about as appealing as the prospect of a Jonas brother, on his “adult” album, releasing a song called “Bacon.”

Katie Gill: I spent way too much time playing “wait a moment, is that really Chord Overstreet in the video.” Spoilers, it is. Frankly, I think that’s a much better use of my time than listening to this song that doesn’t take full advantage of the fact that it’s named “Bacon.” That gives you full license to be as stupid as you want, why are you playing this safe and boring, Nick Jonas? The weirdest thing? Ty Dolla $ign showed signs of having actual talent in the rap break. I don’t know how I feel about that.

Thomas Inskeep: I don’t quite understand why or how the great “Close” wasn’t a summer hit for Jonas, but this a) should do better and b) is even better. It’s pretty fucking great, in fact. This is pop heavily influenced by R&B without sounding as if it’s trying too hard, or trying to ape it. Jonas seems to have a good feel for who he is or is becoming as an artist, while Ty Dolla $ign continues his path towards becoming as unavoidable in the ’10s as T-Pain was in the ’00s. (And I ain’t mad at that.) One of the best bones thrown at pop radio in 2016.

Alfred Soto: Wikipedia: According to Jonas the song is about when you are out of a relationship and you start to be okay with the fact that it’s ended. “In my case my life was great, it’s so good that we should throw some bacon on it to make it even better,” he said. Well, unless you’re vegan, you love bacon, and maybe I love Nick Jonas as much as bacon, especially when he kisses men’s mouths as if they were bologna sandwiches. But the arrangement has the imagination of low salt ham, and Ty’s bemused distance suggests he’s having a fine time watching this hair-lipped fool pretend he’s weird.

Edward Okulicz: I don’t like bacon by itself; it’s too fatty to have in large quantities and I prefer ham. But bacon wrapped around chicken, or bacon wrapped prawns? Give me all of that shit. Also, give me all of that “Love Yourself” shit done with cockiness rather than spite or pity. That beat is slinky while also being a super-confident strut perfect for being over someone or being on the prowl for someone else. In addition, definitely give me Ty Dolla $ign saying “feeling on your booooooooooty.”

Jonathan Bradley: I prefer coffee in the morning.
