Oh My Girl ft. Skull & Haha – A-ing
Oh, my…

Iain Mew: Sounds like “Mysterious Girl” crossed with the saddest of nursery rhymes, and the strangeness of the combination really can’t take it far before it just sounds a mess. Plus, you know, Bubbler Ranx was actually Jamaican.
[2]
Jonathan Bogart: In principle I have no objection to pop music aimed at children of elementary school age, but the thin, determinedly naive nonsense on offer here is patronizing and — whenever the “dancehall” “toasting” breaks out — actively insulting.
[4]
Lilly Gray: For me it’s the completely satisfactory unified dance combined with “wine like dat”; kind of like when someone tells you you’re about to drink milk but it is in fact orange juice.
[1]
Will Adams: Skull & Haha’s contribution is unforgivably bad, but I’m not sure what else could have improved this Baha Men hellscape of a song.
[2]
Thomas Inskeep: I gave their last two songs we covered [4]s, insisting that the last was too “cutesy-poo” by half. Well, this is even more cutesy-poo, with a faux-“island” vibe to boot.
[3]
Alfred Soto: It’s too late and too warm for this kind of exertion about summer.

It’s just a fairly straight cover of a 2000 k-pop hit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsd3dHLpps4
Oh My Girl were on track to have one of the few faultless (K-)pop discographies, at least as a singles act…Bitter medicine here, but necessary. The original song is much more charming, if still negligible/aegyo-damaged.
I’m saving the “I absolutely f*cking hated this” opener for an extreme emergency, but this came the closest out of any song I’ve listened to over the past 3 months.
lmfao drag it!
I can’t believe you guys reviewed this and not Navillera!
the lack of taste and research for this song is unbelievable
this is a cover of 2000 k-pop hit , and the original does have rap and hype section like this
Y’all are getting lazier
Also the fact that Hyuna shitty single is “better” rated than at least this bearable song disgust me
Well Hyuna’s song is better, so the score fits.
@Jennifer nope and I dont wanna debate you about “better” song if you’re already deluded as hell
As I state again, this is a cover and if this site want to cover, they shouldn’t judge the melody and composition (because they doesn’t really change anything)
fun fact: just listened to the original and, nope! my score stays the same
@noname that hyuna song is the worst on the record, but it’s 1) pretty great; 2) miles above…this; 3) on probably the best mini-album out of korea this year. if you wanna drag this place for underrating OMG songs, go dredge up “Closer” or “Windy Day”
Yeah, I don’t think the context that this is a cover makes anyone’s blurb less factual.
knowing that a bad pop song was once an unremarkable pop song would do little to help its case, but it does seem like the type of detail that merits mention.
in any event, i’d like to cop to immediate regret for having said hyuna’s EP was maybe korea’s best of 2016 mere minutes before a red velvet release >_>
I keep forgetting that this was a cover … that said this was unremarkable as hell when I first listened to it, although it grew on me (slightly!)
jakob: on my first run-through of Russian Roulette I think you’re still in good territory. BUT Infinite’s mini is due out on the 19th so watch all my critical objectivity crumble into dust.
(That’s the EP competition, obvs. best Kpop album of 2016 is still Street)
Jennifer: my GFriend singles rank is Navillera -> Me Gustas Tu -> Rough -> Glass Bead.
This song is honestly somehow even worse than the original, perhaps because I’m more forgiving of K-pop songs from that time period. Not to mention ‘A-ing’ is a complete dud compared to the rest of Oh My Girl’s output.
Personally find Closer to be only decent though… yea the music video is great and all but the song itself is a bit of a bore; a slightly above average blog-friendly, overproduced synth-pop track with side-chains-galore (not to mention Mimi’s rap is also merely functional and feels shoehorned in). Windy Day is amazing though.
Wasn’t a fan of the Hyuna single but it’s certainly better than this track. The mini is definitely up there for me though this year (along with the numerous SM minis and NU’EST’s two).
I didn’t know Hyuna’s mini was supposed to be good. I guess I’ll check it out
Funny thing about Closer – Mimi’s part was quite literally shoehorned in since the original song was about 20 seconds shorter and the label asked the producer to extend the ending to make room for her.
Also – A-ing is OMG’s most successful single to date! So they’re doing something right, I guess.
^ Well they’re on the rise, which is probably why they wanted to stay in the limelight and put out a quick cover as a single. They’re on TV quite a lot and more importanty talked about a lot – lots of other pop idols name them as their favorite new group. So we should expect new releases to be new peaks.
@William having conducted the interview you’re quoting, i’d say that misses the point. mimi’s (self-written) rap was a crucial component of the incredibly interwoven concept that “closer” wound up becoming. there are many pointless raps in k-pop, but that is not one.
re: “most successful single to date,” i think that’s got more to do with fanbase build/career momentum than any particular success o f the song. in terms of the streaming charts/public play here in seoul, i encountered it as much as any of their previous singles (not at all). worth distinguishing if only because WM could have released a song/concept as immaculate as any of OMG’s other ones and still would’ve seen an upward trend (“windy day,” their previous and most challenging single, was ’til now their best-performing song and enjoyed a bigger sales leap than “a-ing” did).
and now i read Mat’s response! yes indeed.
@Jessica it’ll need time for me, but Russian Roulette overflows with a weirdness i thought SM had begun to water down, and so i kinda think it wins regardless of whether i like the material better. but on those terms, i do know i at least prefer RR’s single to A’wesome’s (though on one listen i’m not sure if any of RR’s songs will match the audacity/excellence of “Freaky”).
@Jakob: I’ll give it a couple more listens, too, but on first hear it comes off less “weird” and more “they keep shifting down half a step when I don’t want them to.” RR itself started growing on me, though, when I started bring reminded of Jessica Simpson.
While we’re talking EPs, btw, Pink Ocean is pretty strong.
missed blurbing this but YIKES.
is this the lowest K-pop score we’ve had on record?
