Saweetie – My Type

Two people say YEAH!

Will Adams: It’s a tall order to try and match the excellence of “Freek-A-Leek“; Saweetie manages rather well by her sheer energy, especially in that call-and-response hook. The brevity is disappointing and prevents it from being a classic, but I suppose it’s easy enough to play it twice and pretend it’s a full four minutes.

Joshua Minsoo Kim: Saweetie’s multiple vocal deliveries are enough to make these two minutes feel exciting, and certainly more than just nostalgia for “Freek-A-Leek.” Still, there’s a real sense that this should’ve been fleshed out more to showcase more of Saweetie’s capabilities. It’s great TikTok fodder, but I wish it was more than that.

Katherine St Asaph: Not everything has to be a huge important event single; there has to be room for solid, slight radio filler (even if part of that’s mostly powered by “Freek-a-Leek”) like this.

David Moore: I’ve been waiting for the proper “Icy” follow-up, but seems like a bit of a kitchen sink approach– the “Goodies” sample gives me the craving for an old-school mixtape where she takes a joyride through a dozen or so trendy beats rather than this weird quasi-EP resurgence we’re in the middle of. Is Lil’ Wayne the only person left still doing that? It’s fun!

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Sure, it’s basically just a City Girls track reskinned for the Bay (with an assist from Petey Pablo & Lil Jon). But Saweetie’s boasts come off as charming rather than try-hard, and her punchlines hit as well as any. Most of all, “My Type” is straightforward, compact, and fun. It’s the rare 2019 rap hit whose short length is a sign of concision rather than lack of ideas.

Iris Xie: Wow, Saweetie really did grow up in the Bay Area and move to Sacramento, and it shows! “My Type,” along with her other singles, “ICY GRL” and “High Maintenance,” are all part of that nostalgia attack that brings up old feelings of dancing to crunk and hyphy music in middle and high school, and it makes me feel very homey. Even Bay Area Asian kids studying for the SATs (like me) could not escape the force and were drawn into the “get hyphy” conversations. That influence is strong and shows up in the infectious chorus where Saweetie alternates between relaxed cool and assertive yells over a “Freek-a-Leek” sample.” Her breezy verses are fun and lighthearted too. One of my favorite parts is when she goes: “New wrist, new whip, ride around dipped / I can see why all these basic hoes pissed / Messy hoes like to pop shit (Messy hoes)” where she goes from a lower-voiced observation to a much louder proclamation that messy, not boring women get what they want and they should go for it, making something effortlessly empowering without sacrificing any party hype.

One Response to “Saweetie – My Type”

  1. So I definitely confused “Freek-a-Leek” with “1-2 Step” and then confused that with “Goodies.” Google! Always Google!
