TK Kravitz ft. Jacquees – Ocean

Georgia rapper turns his attention to R&B; we are unmoved…

Katherine St Asaph: Pickup lines sourced from Ginuwine’s “Pony” and Usher’s “Dive” (alternate answer: “Here Comes the Rain Again”), then made gross.

Juana Giaimo: This is boring, too explicit, and not nearly as sexy as Miguel’s “Waves.”

Nortey Dowuona: Woozy, calming synths drift behind limp, popping drums. TK Kravitz nasally whinges clumsy pickup lines while Jaquees squeezes through the fog with gently creamy sighs.

Alfred Soto: “I can tell by your eyes that you’re focused,” Jacquees sings, and he could refer to his own ambitions: replacing Jeremih as Featured Artist du jour. He has less to say than Jeremih did at this point in his career: mild sex smut under late seventies L.A. studio rock keyboard trills.

Julian Axelrod: Jacquees is in the R&B up-and-comer sweet spot right now: not so ubiquitous that we’re sick of him, but familiar enough that it’s still a joy to hear his honeyed moan in a feature spot. TK Kravitz shows up and gets the job done, and I love how their back and forth mirrors an old-school duet. But that structure also highlights the disparity between the two singers, and TK doesn’t have the juice to save a chorus built on recycled R&B cliches. We should enjoy this Jacquees micro-era while we can, because soon he’ll reach a point where he doesn’t have to save other people’s songs.

Jonathan Bradley: Summery R&B as chilled as the dive in the ocean promised by the hook. TK Kravitz is a serviceable singer, though hardly a stunning one, and that is ultimately to his song’s detriment: there are too few ideas in this composition for “good enough” to fly.
