Valentino Khan – Deep Down Low

If you wanna get with TSJ there’s some things you gotta know….

Will Adams: Well, it does what it says. My favorite part is hearing that distorted bass tumbles down octaves until its pitch becomes unrecognizable, leaving its harsh timbre to pierce through all the low-end drums. The vocal samples move higher or lower accordingly, and we end up with a rare moment of bass-related title justification.

Iain Mew: At least one site has worked this out as the most played track in dance DJs’ live sets in 2015. I think I can hear why — it’s brutalist functionality all the way.
[5]

Alfred Soto: Brevity is the soul of twits.
[3]

Cassy Gress: I’m bored. I’m bored. I’m bored. I’m bored. Oh, here comes the drop. Maybe it will get good… Nope. Creepy viral videos don’t (or shouldn’t) make up for unimpressive songs.
[2]

Brad Shoup: Like “Ultimate Breaks and Beats,” but for this kind of shit-eating nonsense.
[4]

Jonathan Bogart: Some of the most unabashedly utilitarian music I’ve heard. I can’t judge its effectiveness in the ideal use-case, but standing all on its own it’s still an impressive slab of sound.

Crystal Leww: One of my favorite dance floor moments in 2015 was sweating in the worst club in Chicago, listening to one of my favorite DJs do her thing, feeling myself from a couple of extra drinks and then hearing Destructo’s “Techno” blend right into “Deep Down Low.” As a complete song for listening to at a laptop, “Deep Down Low” doesn’t do much, but as a two minute clip played in the middle of a DJ set on the dance floor, nothing in 2015 was quite better than Valentino Khan’s megahit, which was everywhere anyway. The dumbest and most obvious wave of EDM is over (RIP :(), but the hard-hitting wubs remained. (Also, please check out UNIIQU3 and Tr!ck$’ remix of this track for an idea of how EDM has fragmented and evolved.)
