Becky Hill ft. Topic – My Heart Goes (La Di Da)

Unlike Crystal Waters, her heat does not go “la da dee”…

Dorian Sinclair: Becky Hill has a decent voice, but “My Heart Goes (La Di Da)” is a tremendously forgettable slice of pop. The first verse feels a bit like it’s building to something (albeit mainly because of the deeply cliché rising-steam gliss note undergirding it), but the chorus is so downplayed as to completely deprive us of any sense of release. It’s an anticlimax that’s fatal to the song.

Oliver Maier: As far as inconsequential workout playlist fodder goes, this probably sits in the upper percentile, which sadly is not saying much. Hill’s voice and melodies remind me of Dua Lipa, who I think would probably sing this very silly chorus with the same dead seriousness.

Leah Isobel: A cute little Love Island bop, with hooks stacked competently on hooks. Becky is a long way from creating the best song ever made, but she’s a consummate professional, selling the high notes’ sensory overload and the low notes’ Dua Li-… er, -bidinal desire without being too showy about any of it. The biggest flaw here is brevity; this desperately needs another 30 seconds.

Kayla Beardslee: This is a cute little instrumental that deserves a hook with actual words. Becky Hill and Topic must also be aware that la di da can only get you so far, because they only bother with the bare minimum of two choruses.

Iain Mew: British dance pop with emotions expressed as onomatopoeia is its own minigenre at this point. Becky Hill’s performance has the intensity and focus to convince of the meaning and feeling in anything, and there’s enough else going on to give it space to hit anew each time.

Claire Biddles: I’m sure Becky Hill is a nice person but I cannot think of a more generic popstar — every year she turns up on Christmas Top of the Pops looking like a competition winner. “My Heart Goes (La Di Da)” is fine but it could have been a top ten single any year since 1998, so much so that I thought it was a rework of an existing single. Familiar but aggressively indistinct.

Alfred Soto: Well, it’s a got a hook. You can nod your head at the office to it!
