Samson Savill de Jong: Of all the BBC Sound Of‘s shortlist, Mimi Webb is simultaneously the least interesting artist and the most likely to stick around. These two things are probably not unrelated. Regurgitated pop song production is overlaid by Webb’s uninteresting, uninterested, yet strangely and irritatingly affected voice. She sings with no passion, despite really trying to belt the lyrics out. The song is supposedly about guys who only show up during the weekdays but go out on the lash on the weekend, hence the otherwise baffling “24/5” titular lyric. But I only know that because I looked it up, as the lyrics don’t make anything like that clear. The base professionalism here is indicative of why I reckon Mimi Webb will have longevity, but I can’t imagine actively wanting to put this on.

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: If the conceit needs to be explained by a corresponding Tik Tok in order to be understood –and it still feels dubiously understandable afterwards–it probably isn’t a strong one.

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: The first few times I listened to this I thought this was about a five-day-long relationship, which at least would be slightly novel conceptually. Now I just don’t know what it’s about, who it’s for, or what it’s trying to achieve for anyone.

Jeffrey Brister: I cannot tell you if I’ve ever heard this song before, but I feel like I have. I swear I have. All of its elements combine into something that is so nondescript that I’m simply unable to tell you for sure whether I’ve heard it before, though I’d swear up and down I have. Either way, it’s not good.

Ian Mathers: There are plenty of ways for a song to sound like another song without plagiarism, but whatever the cause or circumstance something in the instrumentation/melody on the chorus here is reminding me of a Sigrid song I’m not sure I can identify right away (“Don’t Kill My Vibe” maybe?). Everything here comes up short in comparison, especially (sorry!) the vocals. There are worse fates than “makes me want to listen to Sucker Punch again”, but there are definitely better ones too.

Alfred Soto: The Cyrus-indebted rasp has the potential to overcome crap less (or more!) histrionic than this.
