Neon Trees – Animal

SINGERS: STOP OPENING YOUR MOUTHS…

David Raposa: You got Muse’s lead singer in my Strokes rewrite! You got The Strokes’ Autobahn-y rhythms in my Killers pastiche! You got The Killers’ nu-wave sheen in my Bravery knock-off! You’ve got to be kidding me!
[4]

Jonathan Bogart: Hit songs based on memories of hit songs from two years ago based on memories of hit songs from five years ago based on memories of hit songs from twenty-five years ago. It’s time to take the remnants of “alternative” radio out back and shoot it.
[3]

Chuck Eddy: Its hook has what I’d describe as a “generic Brit-pop prettiness”. So maybe I should be surprised they’re from Utah, but more likely I’m just confused. (Aha, here’s a clue: They toured with the Killers. So: just more Anglophiliacs, right?)
[5]

Mallory O’Donnell: This would have sounded callow and excessively trendy five years ago, but hearing it in 2010 is a bit like being slapped in the face by Brandon Flowers’ flaccid member.
[1]

Al Shipley: This is the kind of thing that I would have given a middling score to on the first listen, but since that yowling boy/girl chorus has been boring its way into my brain for a few months now, I’m ready to firmly endorse it.
[8]

Martin Skidmore: While I like the ambition of the singing, I don’t think he’s quite good enough to pull it off: I think if his pop voice were a touch sweeter and/or his rock one a touch tougher, I have a feeling I might like this a lot.

Maura Johnston: “Neon Trees’ ‘Animal’ is being featured in the commercials for Camp Vegas. Camp Vegas is a ‘summer camp for grownups’ that is taking place in Las Vegas where participants are included in exclusive events all around Las Vegas that include outdoor concerts, pool parties and plenty more.” Yep, that sounds about right.

  1. the comparisons other writers are making here are not off the mark, but at the same time none of the bands mentioned have made anything remotely this catchy in the last 5 years or so.

  2. I think the adjective you really want to use is “virulent.”

  3. Also, didn’t anyone notice that they swiped the plot for their video (at least the first 50 seconds of it that I watched) straight from that scene in Batman with Vicki Vale?

  4. i think mallory should apologize to brendon flowers, whose member is never flacid.
