EBiSSH – Koi wa Timing

It’s boyband time!

Ryo Miyauchi: The Ebi Dan boys got the chorus section down, but the group overall lack the spotlessness of a Johnny’s unit by a far margin. Based on the idol group roster of Starchild, which counts, say, Momoiro Clover Z as a senior group, EBiSSH might not necessarily need to fulfill the most clean-cut brand of cool. Still, their vocal affects and those dorky rap sections run too rusty to charm.

Ashley John: What EBiSSH lack in originality they double down on in sincerity. “Koi wa Timing” sounds like the tidiest, sleekest version of a boy band, a painting without brush strokes.

Nortey Dowuona: Nice, shifting bass, glossy, cotton candy synths and slick but obvious drums.

Ian Mathers: The vocals seem pretty standard, as does the structure, but I love those weirdly muted, let’s say… rave siren-adjacent synths. It’s like it’s very gently boshing the whole time and it’s kind of endearing.

Will Rivitz: This song isn’t bad by any means, but you can only get so far when you stick an instrumental that sounds like it belongs in a Twitch introduction behind vocals as flat as the uninspired “yes…” at the end of each chorus.

Anjy Ou: A list of things I did not expect when I pressed play on this song: (1) “I LOVE YOU BAE BAE” (2) The thumping, but not overbearing ’90s Europop synths that followed. (3) “Koi Wa Timing” stretched over a full eight count. (4) Me enjoying the earnestness of the chorus. (5) The stripped down middle eight. (6) Actually bobbing my head upon listen two. (7) Seriously considering a third listen even though the song kind of plods along without the catchy vocals. (8) Writing this blurb in list form. (9) Insisting on getting to #10 on the list because it’s a good round number. (10) This score:
