Gorillaz ft. Slowthai & Slaves – Momentary Bliss

Not even a moment on this one, though.

Julian Axelrod: Slowthai and Damon Albarn show palpable chemistry, which makes sense since Slowthai is essentially “Parklife” as a person. Shockingly, the white guys dumb enough to name their band Slaves don’t bring much to the table.

Ian Mathers: There’s ramshackle, and then there’s disjointed, and then there’s taking way too long to get to anything approaching the point (sonic or lyrical). Sounds like it was more fun to make than to listen to.

Alfred Soto: I’ll admit to admiring the effrontery of spending years releasing worktapes and calling them finished music, no more. Dilettantism has no sell-by date. Until now.

Brad Shoup: A curate’s egg of Cocteau chords, Ting Tings cadence, and glitching ska-pop, served alongside some ultra-rare subtweeting.
[5]

Vikram Joseph: After a pretty good collab with Mura Masa that sounded a bit like “Parklife”, Slowthai has now worked with Damon Albarn himself to produce something that sounds like… ersatz Jamie T. “School dinners make me sick!” is a strange hill to die on at this juncture, and there’s a lot of chat about someone called Rita, and… yeah. Remember when Gorillaz were interesting?

Edward Okulicz: Truth be told I’ve never liked Gorillaz much. But at their best, their songs sounded deliberate and crafted. This one sounds as if put together in five seconds, with a vaguely ska feel, as if they’d combined tropes as they pulled them from a hat. The overall effect is like listening to idiots philosophise between hungover spews while being blinded by the morning sun.
